5 Beautiful Restaurants Set in Former Cinemas

Spanning from the roaring twenties to the old South, first-rate American eateries are breathing new life into these grand spaces. Here, AD uncovers the history of these cinematic haunts and what their new food-focused occupants are up to now.

Housed in Nashville’s former Melrose Theater, built in 1942, this elegant and atmospheric restaurant Sinema keeps its theatrical roots intact. Opened in 2014, this two-level fine-dining hotspot blends preserved elements of the Melrose Theater with sleek and modern design and a touch of rock ‘n’ roll. The grand entrance, which was the movie theater’s lobby, houses the theater’s original curved staircase, mirrored ceilings, and exposed brick, masterfully restored. The award-winning Sinema also features plush velvet booths, masterful lighting, and rare black-and-white photographs of music legends, a nod to Nashville’s iconic song history.
